Overview

The Altes Museum, the oldest museum on Berlin's Museum Island, was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and opened its doors in 1830. It is recognised as one of the most significant structures of classicism. The architecture alone is worth a visit, featuring elements such as an expansive portico adorned with imposing columns, an inviting open staircase, and a rotunda embellished with sculptures—all typically reserved for official edifices.Inside, you'll find an impressive collection of classical antiquity artworks. Notable pieces include the statue known as the Berliner Göttin and the Betende Knabe. With skip-the-line tickets, you can bypass the queues and begin your journey through history and art at the Altes Museum.

Berlin’s Museum Island owes its name to the fact that the precious collections of five museums really are located on an island – in the arms of the River Spree, which meanders through the city centre. The imposing buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries adorn the island to form one of the most important museums sites in Europe.
